# How to convert a WebM recording to MP4

> Three ways to convert a screen recording to MP4, including one that does not re-encode.

There is a converter on this page that runs entirely in your browser, and three other ways to do it. Which one suits you depends on the length of the file and how much you care about keeping the original quality.

## Converting on this page

The tool above reads your file, re-encodes it to MP4 and hands it back, without uploading anything. It suits short clips: conversion happens at playback speed, so a two-minute recording takes about two minutes, and the picture is re-encoded rather than copied across.

Whether it appears at all depends on your browser being able to encode MP4 directly. Chromium-based browsers and Safari can; Gecko cannot yet, so Firefox readers will see an explanation where the tool would be.

## HandBrake

Free, has a normal interface, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Open the file, choose an MP4 preset, and press Start. Best option if you would rather not use a terminal.

## ffmpeg

One command: ffmpeg -i recording.webm recording.mp4. Add -c:v libx264 -crf 20 for finer control over quality. Fastest option if you already have it.

## Your video editor

If you are editing the recording anyway, just export as MP4. Which format you get depends on your browser. Converting first and then editing re-encodes twice and loses quality for no reason.

## A note on quality

Every conversion re-encodes and loses a little quality. Convert once, from the original, rather than converting a converted file.
