FAQ
Questions and answers
If something here is unclear, the how it works page goes deeper into the mechanics.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The recorder runs directly in a supported web browser. There is no extension, no desktop app and no driver to install.
Are my recordings uploaded?
No. The recording is processed locally in your browser and is not sent to the application's server. The video data is held in the tab's memory as a Blob and released when you download it, delete it, or close the tab.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no sign-in and no profile. Open the recorder page and press start.
Can I record my microphone?
Yes, provided you allow it. The device stays closed until the switch is on and a capture actually begins, so simply visiting the page never triggers a request.
I have two microphones. Can I choose which one?
Yes. Turn the microphone on and a picker appears next to the switch if more than one is attached. The same applies to cameras. Device names show as "Microphone 1", "Microphone 2" and so on until you have recorded once, because browsers hide the real names until you have granted access at least once.
How do I know my microphone is actually working?
Turn the microphone on and press "Test microphone" before you start. A level meter appears and tells you when it hears you. The microphone is released as soon as you stop the test, and nothing from it is captured or stored. During the recording itself the same meter stays visible, and it warns you if the microphone goes silent for several seconds.
Can I record my webcam?
Yes, if you grant camera permission. The webcam is drawn into the recording as a movable overlay, so the saved file contains both the screen and the camera in a single video track.
How quickly does recording start?
Straight away. Press "Start recording", choose a screen, window or tab in the dialog your browser opens, and recording begins the moment you confirm. If you need a second to get ready, press pause and resume when you are set.
Can I record just part of my screen?
Not within the page. Choose a single window or browser tab in the dialog your browser opens, which is the closest thing to it, or crop the downloaded file in a video editor.
Can I record system audio?
It varies by engine and platform. Chromium browsers let a shared tab bring its sound along, and Windows extends that to a full display. Firefox and Safari offer neither. Your microphone, by contrast, is recorded anywhere. If a recording came out silent, work through the four causes.
What file do I get?
A WebM file in browsers that record WebM, which covers Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Safari records MP4 instead. The recorder asks MediaRecorder what it actually supports and uses the first working option rather than promising a format the browser cannot produce.
How long can a recording be?
There is no time limit built into the app. The practical limit is your device: the recording is held in memory, so very long or very high-resolution captures will use a lot of RAM. For recordings beyond roughly half an hour, save often rather than recording one enormous file. How long a recording can be has the numbers.
Can I edit or trim the recording here?
No. This is a recorder, not an editor: you record, preview and download. Trimming or cropping in the browser means re-encoding the whole video, which takes about as long as the clip runs, so it is quicker to do it in whatever editor you already use.
Can I use it commercially?
The website itself can be offered as a commercial service. Review the licenses of any third-party libraries, fonts, icons, or assets used in the project.
